:: Things I still want to do this winter ::

There are still some things I want to do this winter, and I'm running out of time... also, there is the fact that this has been the mildest winter we've had in a long time. Yes, we had some cold, and we had some snow, but not nearly even half of what we normally get, so, I'm running behind on my winter bucket list. Still left is:

finish these books above
baking this cake
going to the art museum
finish watching this TV series on Netflix
visit Fred and Ethels and take pictures
learn how to finger knit
write a letter to myself {to be opened in 10 years}

:: Style Goals ::

Where to begin? It can be so tiring, the everydayness of getting up, getting ready, going to work, etc, etc; but, that does not mean that you can just let yourself go either. Quit caring about how you look? But, yes, that is what happens to many people, and it's very easy to slip into this mode too. So, to kind of prevent this from happening, I'm taking a look at some style goals for myself which are;

  • Wear my jewelry
  • mix up my clothes and lengths
  • Do something easy with my hair

Sounds simple right?  Well, first of all, I have a wonderful collection of jewelry that has been both gifted to me, and items I have collected over the years. My family and friends have superb taste and know exactly what I like, but I rarely wear any of it. I always seem to be saving it for special times because I've always been a little afraid of breaking or losing anything. Not anymore. I want to be able to look down at my hands on the keyboard and smile over the memories that flood my mind when I see a certain ring, or hear a jangle of bracelets at my wrist and remember where and when each little charm was given.

I am, if nothing else, always a creature of habit. Just ask anyone who spends a little time with me. I like routine and familiarity, patterns and predictability. But then, I also like to be unpredictable as well. I should wear more skirts. I have lots of them, and pair them with t-shirts and sweaters- just some different things, not of the normal.

My hair... where to start. A long time bane of my childhood, full of kinks and curls, snarls and knots. Really, my teenage years weren't much better, but with the coming of the blow dryer I was able to at last straighten that birds nest on my head. I need to let it go. Accept the kinks and curls. work with them not against them. Find a cut that allows for this and just let it go. Easy care. No more spending an hour on straightening it.

Well those are my style goals. Do you have any in particular for yourself? Well, wish me luck!

:: On drawing ::

In this fast paced digital world we live in, it's important to know that there is still something so incredibly beautiful about the written word. The idea of taking time to put pen to paper and let your thoughts and ideas flow out onto a page. Whether in a daily diary, or a memory journal, a doodle pad or a wish book... it is so calming to just get the contents out of your mind and down onto a clean white page. I really love journals with soft leather covers, all sorts of sensory pleasure all mixed into one... the smell of the rich leather, the smooth touch, watching the words. Sometimes drawing a picture with it, sometimes gluing in a picture... Try it... it's easier to do than you might think. I keep a small zippered pouch full of colored pencils, an eraser, and my thin lined pens handy in case I find myself somewhere with time to kill. A beautiful notebook, a pen, and some pencils, a few hours in your favorite place, try it and see what happens.

:: Cold mornings and oatmeal ::

I have discovered something funny about myself. I really like oatmeal. {snort} I mean, it's not like I didn't know it was there. In fact, its always in my cupboard. I use it in many recipes, but never just as plain old oatmeal. That is, until now. And, I love it. I love mixing stuff in it, and last Sunday I even tried a new recipe {which was delicious by the way} for baked oatmeal, but it was very sweet and needed milk added to it, then it was perfect. It's so nice to eat something warm when it's cold and you have to venture out to work. It's kinda like getting a great big hug from the inside out. How about that? You simply must try it!

Baked Oatmeal
3 cups quick-cooking oats
1 cup packed brown sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 eggs
1 cup milk
1/2 cup butter, melted
Additional milk
1. Preheat oven to 350°. In a large bowl, combine oats, brown sugar, baking powder, salt and cinnamon. In another bowl, whisk eggs, milk and butter. Stir into oat mixture until blended.
2. Spoon into a greased 9-in. square baking pan. Bake 40-45 minutes or until set. Serve warm with milk. Yield: 9 servings.

:: Is it winter? Is it Spring? ::

I know it's February. But looking outside... you wouldn't know it. It's bright. It's sunny. It's 60 degrees. Does that sound like a Midwest winter to you? Folks, I think we may FINALLY be getting some of that global warming that was promised to us. Well, all I can say is, IT'S ABOUT TIME! I'm so happy I can't even tell you. And looking at the forecast coming up, our highs should at least stay in the high 40's, and I can live with that. Oh yes, I can live with that. You know, if we have nicer and shorter winters, I may not move south after all. In fact, I may look north where it's much prettier. It's certainly an interesting thought now, isn't it?

Can really turn an afternoon into playtime...

:: About today ::

Things I did today:

  • made a menu and went grocery shopping before the snow got too bad. just made it.
  • laundry. slowly. Painfully slowly. I have one load left in the dryer. I must go get it, fold it and put it away.
  • cleaned a billion gross dishes. and because I baked several things today, the mess just kept growing.
  • hung a new wreath on the front door, more for winter, less Christmasy. Is that a word even? whatever.
  • took out the trash-sort of. It's by the back door awaiting a trip to the garage where the garbage can is.
  • didn't talk to anyone all day. turned my phone off last night. it has been blissfully peaceful.
  • paid a couple of bills online per usual.
  • fertilized all the plants, even though they are all dropping leaves like crazy lately.
  • whipped up some french onion soup today. even though it takes hours, it's always well worth it.
  • tossed a delicious leafy green salad with the most delicious poppy-seed bacon dressing I made.
  • baked up some breakfast muffins and some peanut butter and jelly granola bars
  • drank afternoon tea
  • read for a few hours
  • shoveled the walkway between the house and the garage
  • perused some beautiful magazines
  • watched the first Harry Potter movie {it's the only one I've seen, and it's been years}
  • thinking of having a Harry Potter movie marathon this week.
  • played on the computer for a few hours.
  • now it's past my bedtime. and i'm falling asleep on my desk. this was a pretty good day.

:: Recently ::

Recently, I have been:

Trying to find a sliver of time to write here.
Cleaning and purging the house from top to bottom like the Pope's coming for tea. He isn't, but you never know.
Happily consuming bags of Cutie clementines and those large, sweet, seedless globe grapes.
Watching HGTV and wishing I could hire this designer to revamp my whole house.
Making two dozen deviled eggs for a neighborhood party.
Keeping up with my 365  projects. They keep me pretty busy. But, it will be worth it in the end.
Considering starting a postcard collection. This site, and this site have lots of information about postcards.
Experimenting with my camera. Taking stills and trying to photograph bubbles... don't ask!
Cursing at the ice cube trays at work. Why is it so hard to get the cubes out of the trays? I'm serious. I think I'm missing something. At home, they just come right out of the dispenser on my freezer, but here, I must deal with these darned trays. There has to be some special trick or something. It's really become quite the problem, and I am a girl who always needs a good supply of ice on hand.
Driving all over the place, but not getting anything accomplished. Not a good thing. Ever.
Helping a friend decide if she should move. Ten hours away from here. Sigh. Of course I am encouraging her to go. For all the right reasons it would be perfect for her. Just lousy for me. But, hey, gives me a good excuse for a road trip right?!!!
Thinking I'm going to use my Pizza coupon tonight and have everything MY way. Yeah, that's the ticket.
So, what the heck have you been up to?
